Earlier this month, Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance when he took to the stage to unveil Apple’s new iPad 2. At the iPad 2 event, held March 2, 2011, Job shuck the rumors that he would not be able to attend, to give us an in-depth view of the tablet that will quite clearly be the one to beat in 2011.
The new iPad 2 is available in either black or white, and features the same size display housed in a slightly smaller form factor. Overall its dimensions make it around one-third thinner and 15 percent light than the original.
Apple iPad 2 Available in Black or White
Apple has included two cameras on the iPad2, one VGA front-facing camera, and one rear-facing-camera that is capable of capturing 720p HD video. Both cameras record up to 30 frames a second, and the in-built exposure settings allow users to adjust their video or still image settings.
The 9.7 inch led backlit display remains the same with a 1024 x 768 pixels and a nice wide 178° viewing angle. As with all Apple’s touch screen devices, the iPad 2 features the company’s classic multi-touch gesture technology.
Under the hood the iPad2 feature a 1GHz dual-core A5 CPU which, on paper, is twice as fast as the original. Apple has also upped the system memory from 256MB to 512MB of RAM, and included a faster NVIDIA graphics engine. Even with these upgraded specs, the battery still claims to provide up to 10 hours of juice, even whilst playing video.

Connectivity is taken care of via 3G and 802.11n wireless,
Other features include a gyro accelerometer and compass, 3.5-mm stereo headphone minijack, built-in speaker and microphone. Apple has also included a 30 pin adaptor for easy output to a second monitor, and the new video mirroring software allows others to see exactly what you’re doing on a second HD monitor.
iPad 2 Smart Cover
One of the most talked about additions not an upgrade in hardware but comes in the form of a new Smart Cover. The iPad 2’s new protective sleeve is highly versatile and features built in magnets that keep the iPad secure in its place. The single layer foldable cover protects the screen without adding the bulk which often surrounds devices for protection, it also folds up to double as stand for watching movie or typing. When the device is in use, the Smart Cover flips over like the page of book to cover the durable aluminum finished back, and from this position the cover can be folded to reveal the rear facing HD camera. The polyurethane, or leather covers are available in a range of colors.
