Apple has finally unveiled its new iPhone 5, and although the device bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor the iPhone 4S, its new features are certainly not lacking.
The first most noticeable difference is its size. The new iPhone 5 sports a larger 4-inch Retina display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1136 x 640px.Apple claims its new display is “the most accurate display in the industry” since the touch sensors are embedded in the display as well.
The new screen size displays 5 rows of apps, as opposed to the 4 rows found on previous models. And even though the display is larger, the phone is actually 20% lighter and 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S – H = 4.87 inches (123.8 mm), W = 2.31 inches (58.6 mm), D= 0.30 inch (7.6 mm), 3.95 ounces (112 grams).
Another noticeable difference is the new Lightning connector. The new digital port replaces the classic 30-pin standard with a reversible connector, which means you’ll need an additional adaptor to connect your iPhone to existing 30-pin devices.
Under the hood the phone features new A6 chip, and runs Apple’s new iOS6. Buyers can expect to find built-in. apps such as Siri, Maps, Camera, HD Video Recording, iTunes, App Store, iCloud, Passbook, FaceTime, Mail, Safari, Messages, Reminders, Music, Calendar, Contacts, Find My iPhone, Newsstand, and many more.
Apple has stuck with an 8MP resolution camera, however the backside-illuminated sensor is smaller, performs much better in low light, and features a built-in panoramic mode. The camera also supports HD 1080p with 30fps, and FaceTime HD camera with 1.2MP photos and HD video (720p) up to 30 frames per second.

Wireless networking is now even faster too. The handset features LTE support and 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi, without draining the battery too much – 8 hours of 3G, LTE and Wi-Fi browsing time, 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback.
Apple has, for the first time, completely redesigned its headphones to better fit inside the ear. The new EarPods also have improved acoustics with upgraded speaker diaphragms.
The audio has also received an upgrade with a smaller but improved speaker. There are also now three microphones, one on the front, one on the back and another on the bottom. Unfortunately, speculations that the iPhone 5 would feature Near Field Communication (NFC) were incorrect, however there’s no doubt we’ll see this included in the next model.
The new iPhone 5 is available in available with 16, 32, 64GB storage, in ceramic white or anodized black. It is available, as of 22nd October, on contract from AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint, or unlocked.
