ASUS Eee Pad
ASUS Eee Pad tablet PCs coming in 8.9”, 10” and 12” versions?
Although 2010 was touted as the year of the tablet, nothing has been able to match the success with which Apple’s iPad was received.
To be honest, I’m betting there’s quite a few people out there still blissfully unaware of the presence of other tablets such as the Dell Streak, Axiontron ModBook, Touch Book Arm, and the Archos 9 - but that may all be about to change with the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy and the forth coming range of ASUS Eee Pads.
Famous for pioneering the netbook world with its huge range of Eee PCs, ASUS seems to be planning an equally large campaign for its tablet PCs as 3 models – the 8.9” EP90, 10” EP101, and the 12” EP121 – with varying display dimensions have already been rumored months before any official release dates have been announced.
In its early prototype days, the Eee Pad came in two versions; one running Windows Embedded Compact, and upgraded version of Windows CE; the other running Google Android. Now it seems that Windows has been dropped on the smaller 8.9” EP90 and the 10” EP101 models in favor of Google’s Android OS. The 12” EP121 is still thought to be running Windows.
Many sources have the ASUS Eee Pads release date pegged for sometime after the January CES 2010 expo, although some have said this could be as late as March. It’s also still not clear exactly which version will drop first.
What we do know is that the Eee Pad will be powered by a dual core 1GHz CPU and NVIDIA’s Tegra GPU. And all models are said to have an accompanying a docking station with e keyboard, which allows the machine to be used as a laptop.
According to PCWorld and Liliputing.com the 8.9” and 10” tablets will cost $399 – $499 and the 12” EP121 will cost around $1000.
