Bionic Contact Lenses Give Troops Cyborg Vision

U.S. troops to get terminator-style vision…

In the pursuit to equip troops with the most up-to-date technology, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to give soldiers bionic contacts lenses that enable terminator-style vision.

The digital contacts, developed by researchers at Innovega iOptics, would allow troops to access the same data information typically shown on other head’s up displays – without the bulky helmets or head sets usually required to house such systems.

The lenses work by projecting digital images onto small full color displays next to the wears eye. The set up allows the soldier to focus on distant targets whilst viewing overlaying tactical information.

In development as pat of the agency’s Soldier Centric Imaging Via Computational Cameras (SCENICC) program, the contact lenses hope to bridge the gap between the information gathered by drones, and the information sent and received by troops on the ground.

And although it may seem like science fiction, the bionic contact lenses may be functional sooner rather than later. In 2008, researchers developed the first working bionic contact lens, and more recently in 2011, the lenses were successfully tested on rabbits.

  1. Quality of vision correction is one area where contact lenses are superior to glasses no matter who you are. Since the lens part of contact lenses sits directly on your eye and covers the seeing part of your eye completely, you will have corrected vision all around, including to the top, bottom, and sides, whereas with glasses, there is no correction for your peripheral vision. That can be problematic for activities like driving, or if the quality of your vision is important in your profession.;”
