Boeing General Atomics Aerodynamic Rail Gun Round
New aerodynamic rail gun round travels further than ever before…
General Atomics has recently unveiled its new aerodynamic rail gun round developed for the company by Boeing. The three piece design separates once it’s been fired from the rail gun leaving a rocket-shaped projectile that travels much further than the ‘hypersonic bricks’ the rails gun had previously been firing.
When fired at 0 degree gun elevation (completely level) at 1600 meters per sec, or around mach 5, the new aerodynamic projectile flew 7km down range before stopping, and that’s after pierced a sheet of steel 1/8 of an inch thick 100 yards away from the rail gun.
General Atomics hopes to have the rail gun and its new aerodynamic rounds ready for deployment on the USS Arleigh Burke DDG51 in roughly 7 years.
