"what does trying to smash particles in to each othe rat the speed of light, to try to prove Einstein’s theory, have to do with storing and xfering binary data?"
You haven`t read the article;
"During the development of the new particle accelerator, researchers realized that the LHC would generate 56 million CD’s – equivalent to a stack of CD’s 40 miles high – worth of data every year.
This meant that scientists at CERN – where Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the web in 1989 – would no longer be able to use his creation to transfer the huge amounts of data.
This is because the Internet has evolved by linking together a network of cables and routing equipment which was originally designed for telephone calls and therefore lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission.
The grid on the other hand has been built with dedicated fiber optics and modern routing centers which are all capable of high speed data transfer. There are already 55,000 servers installed worldwide, with numbers expecting to rise to 200,000 by 2010."
So we will be surfing the GRID in the Future instead of the internet. 10.000 times faster then broadband access today. Storing most of our information online and having faster access to that information than on our own current hard drives. Video phone HD/Hologram telephone calls for pennies and Massive online games with millions of people from around the world all playing in the same game on the exact same time. And that`s just the beginning.

jrome, your not supposed to ask such questions ;)

most likely this is being set up to be able to easily police the internet, and then it will most likely be used when they start selling chips for a neural interface. or i could be crazy.

This is a technological development of astonishing dimensions and the potential for great usefulness and efficiencies. It is to be hoped that it will not be allowed to wither away, not given enough support by government institutions and by the corporate sector. As scientific and technological support become more and more narrowly focussed in recent decades, much, with potentially great usefulness, is being lost because no immediate profitability or discerned. Pity. It is to be hoped that this will not be the case here.
