A new smart missile disables all nearby electronic devices with microwaves…
A new smart weapon may provide the military with a new way to ensure that projectiles hit the target without being tampered with. The Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project or CHAMP, uses an on-board microwave system to blast high power microwaves, effectively disables any electronic devices that are within range as it flies.
Developed by Boeing Phantom Works team along with members from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate team, and Raytheon Ktech, suppliers of the High Power Microwave source, the new CHAMP projectile was successfully tested in the Western Utah Desert on October 16th.
In the first of 7 tests, CHAMP flew by a two-story building and used its on-board microwave system to successfully shut down all electronics inside the place. In fact the tests went so well that it also disabled the cameras recording the trials.
CHAMP program manager Keith Coleman said:
“This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare. In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy’s electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive…. [We] made science fiction science fact.”
It’s still unclear whether the technology will see deployment, however James Dodd, vice president of Advanced Boeing Military Aircraft, part of Phantom Works, said that there is drastic need for a weapon that can defend itself, whilst causing no harm to civilians or structures:
“We know this has some capabilities and some impact, we’re really trying to engage the customer to see if there is a way we can actually get this fielded and implemented sooner than later,” Dodd said.
