Digital Easter Eggs Hidden Your DVDs

Top Blu-ray movies with hidden digital Easter eggs...

Easter eggs come in many shapes and sizes, as well as in many form factors. So if you’ve had enough of the traditional chocolate Easter eggs this weekend, perhaps it’s time to dig through your DVD collection and treat yourself to some digital Easter eggs that are hidden away on disks you may already own.

A digital Easter egg is simply a little treat, or secret feature, that has been cleverly hidden awaiting unveiling from inquisitive fans. Many DVDs have Easter eggs stashed away, so it’s quite likely that you already own a disk containing one. Check out the list below to see if any of your favorite DVD movies come with surprise digital Easter egg.

From the main menu select the ‘Ginormous Extra’s’ section. Once inside, press the ‘Up’ key on your remote and you will see the words ‘Do Not Press!’. Select this feature and you will access a new menu that takes you to Dreamworks-related movie trailers (How to Train Your Dragon), TV show and DVD ads (Shrek the Halls, Secrets of the Furious Five, The Penguins of Madagascar), video games (Monsters vs. Aliens and Kung Fu Panda World) and a backstage view of Broadway’s Shrek: The Musical.

Select special features from the main menu. Move the cursor to highlight the ‘Main Menu’ at the bottom of the screen, but don’t press Enter/Select. Instead press the ‘Left’ arrow key and a circle in the middle of the tuxedo jacket will become illuminated.

Now press Enter/Select and you will see an interview with Marvel’s Stan Lee and Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. on the red carpet.

Hidden away on the first disc is a table reading of the second Family Guy parody of the Star Wars films (Something, Something Dark Side).

From the main menu select ‘Options’. Highlight the ‘Resume Episode’ option, but don’t press Enter/Select. Instead press the ‘Left’ arrow button and you’ll see some electrical charges illuminate. Now press Enter to see the entertaining clip.

A couple of Easter eggs hidden away in this one. On the forth disc, highlight the main menu option ‘Set Up’, but don’t press Enter/Select. Instead press the ‘Up’ arrow button and a Godfather icon will appear. Now press Enter and you will see clip of director Francis Ford Coppola discussing his research on the mafia.

On the fifth disc – Highlight the ‘Set Up’ option, don’t press Enter/Select, this time press the ‘Right’ arrow button. A globe will be highlighted. Now press enter to view clips from the Italian and German language version of the film.

From the main menu select ‘Galleries’ > ‘DVD Credits’. Next keep pressing the arrow key until you get to the end. When you reach the end you will be treated to a clip of the Sopranos trying to watch and ‘advanced bootleg’ version of the Godfather on DVD.

From the ‘Family Tree’ menu select ‘Sonny’. On the next screen select Sonny again; this will take you to the family tree of Santino Corleone. Now press the ‘Left’ arrow button to highlight the image of actor James Caan. Press Enter to read Cann’s bio, press the ‘Left’ arrow button to see Caan’s screen test for his role as Sonny.

In the ‘Filmmakers’ section select ‘Mario Puzo’s Biography’. Next press the ‘Left’ arrow button twice and a dollar sign will appear. Now press Enter and you’ll see a short clip in which, Coppola asks Puzo why he wrote the Godfather.

A great little Easter egg hidden away on the disc. On the Main Menu keep pressing ‘Up’ until the cursor disappears. Now press Enter to see the deadly video tape from the film.

Once you’ve returned back to the main menu, you’ll hear a phone ring coming from the DVD.

There are several Easter eggs hidden away in the seasons of Lost. But a clear favorite would be on the 7th disc of the 2nd season. From the Main Menu select ‘Phase Two’. Highlight the ‘Sneak Peaks’ option but don’t press Enter/Select. Instead hit the ‘Left’ arrow button and blue dot will appear on the screen. Now press Enter to a watch an interview with Evangeline Lilly, the actor who plays Kate.

There is couple of not-so-well hidden treats for Trekkies stashed away in these discs. On the second disc, highlight the red button at the bottom of the screen and press Enter. You’ll be taken to a three-minute special effects highlights reel from the remastered version of the show.

Do the same on the fifth disc and you can watch a humorous minute-long spot for Star Trek Remastered.
