Halo 3 Game Review and Videos

Halo 3 sees Master Chief back in action with some great new features as well as new weapons, vehicles and equipment.

There was never really any doubt the X-Box’s favorite master chief would return in another episode of the Halo series, especially with the cliff hanger we were all left with at the end of Halo 2. Well, avid fans (who haven’t already completed the game) will be please to hear the final chapter in the Halo trilogy continues the story and concludes it brilliantly.

For those who didn’t get caught up in one of the most popular games in history, the Halo story centers on the interstellar war between 26th century humanity, led by the United Nations Space Command, and a collection of alien races known as the Covenant. The player assumes the role of the Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, as he wages war in defense of humanity, assisted by human Marines as well as allied alien Elites.Following the events of Halo 2 – The Covenant is on its way to Earth, continuing its universal ethnic cleansing and attempting to activate the floating space weapons known as Halos, which could destroy civilization as we know it. The Master Chief and the other Earth forces of the UNSC are in hot pursuit to stop them, with newfound alien allies such as the Arbiter coming along for the ride.

The third and final part of the Halo trilogy was released in September, 2007. During the opening day, over one million people connected to X-Box live to play Halo 3 and by the end of the day, Halo 3 had broken the record for the highest grossing opening day in entertainment history, bringing in $170 million within the first 24 hours. The game then went on the sell over 8.1 million copies by January 2008.

So now this is officially the most popular game to date, let’s take a look at the new features Bungie Studios have added.

Halo 3 contains nine levels. The campaign can be played through alone, or played cooperatively with other players via Xbox Live or System Link. Four players can now go through the campaign and instead of having each player as an identical Spartan – as in previous Halo games – the first player plays as Master Chief, the second player plays as the Arbiter and the other two players control two other Elites. The four player campaign can also be played via X-Box live.

In addition to the four-player co-op action, you can also play competitive solo and team-based multiplayer matches with up to 16 players on 11 different maps. There are a lot of options when it comes to multiplayer mode, games include deathmatch and team deathmatch rounds, as well as objective-based games like capture the flag, a mode called territories – in which the two teams fight to defend or attack various control points around the map, there is also a new mode called infection – where a percentage of the players start as sword-wielding zombies and must convert the members of the other team by killing them, until only one non-zombie remains.

All of the multi player modes can be played on any of the maps, this is sure to add hours of gameplay to Halo 3, even after you’ve completed the campaign.

Straight away we see the game play aspect has been developed somewhat and of course, it doesn’t stop there, Halo 3 also includes three great new features that further add to the games playability:The ‘Forge’ map editor is a map-editing tool that enables players to insert game objects, such as weapons and crates, into existing multiplayer maps. Almost all weapons, vehicles, and interactive objects can be placed and moved on maps with the Forger tool. Forge also allows multi players to work on maps at the same time. The ‘Saved films’ feature allows players to save up to 100 films of gameplay to their Xbox 360’s hard drive, the film can then be viewed from any angle at different speeds. Saved Films are only game data (not an actual video) and this allows the file sizes to be smaller than a true recording.

The “equipment” concept is also new to the series. Equipment includes deployable special items that have a variety of effects. One example is the bubble shield, both you and your enemies can pass through it, but bullets and explosions are deflected. You’ll also come across items that make shields regenerate more quickly, and others that drain enemy shields or stop their vehicles dead in their tracks. These items also show up in multiplayer, where they’re a little more interesting.

All the classic Halo vehicles are available including the Ghost – a hovering one-person craft that’s fast and deadly, and the Warthog – a dune buggy with a turret mounted in the back. You’ll also see new vehicles, such as the Brute Prowler – which is a two-person vehicle with turrets.New weapons include a flame thrower, a fully automatic “spiker” (like a handheld mini-gun), plus the gravity hammer that was originally shown – but unusable – in Halo 2 is now available for the players. The gravity hammer can wipe out most regular enemies in one swipe and is especially fun in multiplayer mode. Some larger weapons have also been added to the game. These weapons are so big you movement is restricted by the weight, despite this slight handicap these weapons are fatal and can cause some wicked damage.

There are lots of new teaks which ensure Halo experts will not be rushing through the game too quickly. The behavior of the enemy Brutes has been modified, giving them a “pack mentality” that causes the aliens to perform similar actions at the same time. And the “skulls” collected throughout the game modify things like the enemies health to make gameplay harder as you go through the levels and collect more skulls.Perhaps the biggest bonus feature of Halo 3 is the ability to modify and change almost anything you want. Halo 2 did include some options for mod’s but Halo 3 really goes in-depth allowing you customize things like gravity settings, game speed, damage resistance etc. And with the inclusion of the Forge option Halo 3 really is as customizable as it could be.
