Designed and built by Roland Tower, this DIY flamethrower was rigged up using $100 worth of random bits from a hardware store. A very temping project for any testosterone fueled male. Keep reading to view a video clip of the homemade flamethrower.
First up is the gun. Using PVC piping, the correct connectors and a couple of valves, you should be able to build a flame projecting gun. As you can see in the picture, everything fits together very nicely with no need for modifications to any of the components.

The next image shows how the hose connects to a stop valve, which is then connected to a short pipe nipple that’s tapped directly into the tank.

The tank is also made up from PVC piping. At either end of the tanks are two 90 degree elbows which have been welded together to form a 180 elbow. The elbows are then welded to the straight pipes, one of which has a T-junction.

Before assembling the other parts, Two standard pipe holes need drilling and threading in the tank. One is used for the outlet to the hose, the other is used to pressurize the tank.

The tank is then cemented at both ends.

Then rigged up to an old backpack for mobility. The hose is connected to the backpack though a hole cut into the bottom of the bag.

A tire pressure valve or Schrader valve is then added to tank to help pressurize the device.

Next comes some safety measures. In Roland’s own words,
Since I would soon be running the distinct risk of giving myself heat-assisted, deep tissue exfoliation, I was extra-careful to make sure there weren’t any leaks. I used up a lot of Teflon tape.

Making sure the cleanout cap is on nice and tight you can then add water for a test run.

Attach the compressor and turn on the air. If there are no leaks, you can begin testing with water.

Pretty damn powerful hey? Now its time to add a pilot light in the form of a blow torch.

Viola, the finished product.

Just add fuel, in this case, denatured alcohol ( PVC is soluble in gasoline).

And starting flaming away.

Military models use a sticky “jellied” mixture that adheres to whatever it contacts until the fuel runs out. Nice effort, however…
damn this thing looks like a great model, all the other stuff is made out of squirt guns
better ideas:
Use a powerwasher gun instead of the metal pipe thing.
Add some check valves in case the flame siphons back into the tank (blowing it up)

thanx brother, i made a similar thing but much smaller and fixed it in our remote controlled robo car, and everyone in the robo fight contest were f***ed up, we fried their a** to stone age

Once the tank is empty, and full of vaporized gas, you WILL blow yourself up eventually. No question on that.

try filling it with paint fill, and leaving the whole, “flaming/exploding/death” part out
Can anybody say what PSI pressure is being used in this flame thrower? I am trying to make it but i am not sure of the psi.
I with a friend made one of these and it exploded just like I thought it would 50 lbs pressure. I am going to make another one but only to shoot insecticide only. Adults, kids whatever do not use it for a flame thrower trust me on this. If I ever made a flame thrower it would be made out of steel. On the pvc it tells you plain as day not for pressure. Plain as I can say it do not make one. Ray
now first things first sch 40 pvc and sch 80 can be used with pressure up to 150psi. also the only thing that would weaken pvc is paint lacquer me and my science team specialize in this kind of stuff.
Sorry smart one, but if you were on a so called “science team,” you wouldn’t be giving incorrect information about schedule 40 and schedule 80 PVC piping on a flamethrower thread. Schedule 40 and 80 have a multitude of different PSI ratings depending on the nominal pipe size and whether it is schedule 40 or schedule 80. The maximum operating pressure (depending on the size) can be anywhere from well below 150psi to well above 150psi. Those are safety ratings. All of the sizes do have a required minimum burst pressure that is anywhere from around 400psi to around 2500psi depending on the size of the pipe and whether it is schedule 40 or 80.
Just get the long safety lighters and a can of bugspray. Light the lighter as far away from you as possible. Spray the insect killer above the flame. Safer not safe but safer.Note: DO NOT! DO NOT UNDER ANY CONDITION TRY THIS WHILE THE WIND IS BLOWING!

PVC pipe of any rating is not meant for compressed air or gas, it is extremely dangerous if and when it fails. Any notching or weakness in the pipe can cause it to fail under any amount of “air” pressure. PVC pipe and withstand quite a bit of fluid pressure under normal circumstances, however, if you introduce air into a pressurized closed system the “air” in the system pressurizes exponentially. When the failure happens the PVC material will violently release and shrapnel the PVC, that along with the combination of fuel and heat from compression would be a very, very bad. All manufacturers of PVC pipe have warnings about not for use with compressed air (except for possible testing at a maximum of 5 psi).
