Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid, a tablet and laptop in one device...

The New Year brought with it a slew of great articles, so many in fact that we haven’t had chance to featured our favorite gadgets from this year’s CES expo, Jan 7-10th. So first up, my personal pick of the bunch – The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid.

The new IdeaPad U1 hybrid roles a detachable touch-tablet and laptop into one device. At first glance the U1 may look like any other Lenovo IdeaPad, but with a flick of the fingers, the 11.6 inch screen pops out to become a tablet PC.

Liu Jun, senior vice president, Idea Product Group, Lenovo said:

“The IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook is a game-changing technology in the PC industry that lets user switch their PC experience within a single device to match their dynamic lifestyle,”

“By fusing the functionality of a notebook with the slate tablet’s rich multitouch entertainment and mobile Internet experience, U1 provides consumers the freedom to choose the device they prefer for any activity.”

Both units have their own processors, the laptop base currently runs an Intel Core 2 Duo ULV CPU, and the tablet a CULV Intel Core 2 Duo.

The laptop base comes with a 128GB SSD running Windows 7. The detachable display supports resistive multitouch, has a native resolution of 1366×768, it’s own battery, Wi-Fi and 3G cards, 16GB of flash storage, a webcam and runs Lenovo Skylight Linux. The tablet also sports an accelerometer to change the orientation of the picture when you rotate the tablet from landscape to portrait.

The switch between laptop and tablet is seamless, with the same window opening on the table just a few seconds after popping it out. Lenovo also says that both devices can be use at the same time, with the laptop based support HDMI out for extra monitor reality.

Check out the video for a quick demo. Although this isn’t a hands on review, the concept advert is exactly the same the real product demoed at CES.

The machine is set to ship on June 1 in America for $US999 ($1081).
