Concept designs for the PS4, which is rumored to be released next year…
It’s been a long time coming, and we’re still not sure exactly when can expect it, but the Playstation 4 is due to some time hit next year.
Codenamed the Orbis, there’s not much confirmed information about the forthcoming console, but several sources are quoting tip offs and rumors in an attempt to get a definitive answer.
Some sources say the system will run on IBM’s POWER7 architecture, which would feature a chip with 10-12 cores and 32-48MB of shared L3 cache. The performance of the chip would reach up to 200GFLOPS; the current PS3 is only capable of 15GLOPS.
Rumor also has it that the CryEngine3 will serve as the consoles GPU, and since Crytek has already unveiled graphics engine earlier this year, a 2013 release for the PS4 could certainly work in terms of timing.
Unfortunately the PS4 may not be backwards compatible with PS3 games, but there is talk that the system could be forward compatible with Xbox 720 games, which could open up a world of possibilities for multiplayer gaming. Fans are hoping that the current cap of 24 online players could be raised up to 64.
Although there are scant details about the highly anticipated PS4, the Internet community hasn’t been shy on creating some great looking concept pictures. Check out some of these sleek looking designs and videos. If the PlayStation 4 looks anything like those below, we’re in for a treat.
