Thales Storm-H Invisible IED Shield
Thales Storm-H provides portable jamming protection against IEDs…
Improvised explosive devices pose such a massive threat on the battlefield largely due to the remote nature in which they can be donated. There’s hardly a mobile device on the market today that doesn’t have the capability to trigger a makeshift bomb on request. But this advantage also comes with weaknesses; weaknesses that IED jammers such as Thales Storm-H Invisible IED shield can exploit.
When it comes to defending troops against IEDs, there are numerous systems that effectively counter these threats, however many of these systems are based around protective armor that deflects the impact of the blast. Unfortunately this isn’t always enough to provide sufficient shielding, which is why Thales developed its Electronic Countermeasure (ECM) system in order to prevent the blast.
Not the first electronic IED jammer developed, but certainly one of the most portable. The exact specifications of the Storm-H are being kept under wraps, but we do know that the wearable, radio-sized jammer provides an invisible shield that jams IED over several meters.
It can be programmed ‘defeat any threat from the 20-MHz to 470-MHz range broadcast in up to eight waveforms at the same time’, which helps protect against the latest known threats, and its low power consumption allows it to operate for up to 8 hours.
The Storm-H Invisible IED EMC was inspired by the UK Ministry of Defence’s FIST (Future Integrated Soldier Technology) initiative, which calls for a more effective management of power and weight.
