Troops Build Off Road RC Race Tracks To Kill Time

Troops race off road radio-controlled cars to in their down time…

Down time in a military warzone is not like spending time off work, stationed far from home-comforts, most troops turn to watching DVDs, and playing games on their laptops to while away the hours.

But sometimes that just isn’t enough, so Afghanistan-deployed airmen devised a way to have their own fun; by racing off road remote control cars, on dirt racetracks.

The Combat Search and Research Team, at the Bagram Air Base, Kabul, built the first track, known as the Rescue-Racing Morale Park, in 2011.

Of course, the military can’t go handing out supplies whenever someone wants to do a DIY job, and resources are tightly regulated. However, with a little will and lot of time, everything came together.

The track took some work to build (as you can see from the pics), it had enough girth to race 12 car simultaneously and at first had wooden jumps, that were later upgraded with two switchback dirt jumps. The dirt itself was supplied a local contractor, and most of the other materials donated.

Unfortunately the track was demolished in 2011 to make way for a more official unit, but the trend has been catching on. Since the word got round, troops up Camp Phenoix also built a track, and the guys behind the original are also back for another tour and plan to build another.
